The release date is set. Nintendo’s new, all-in-one gaming/media console is releasing on Friday, March 3, 2017!
The aptly named Switch will allow players to swap among unique portable/multiplayer gameplay options and a tablet plus the traditional at-home console experience.
For a suggested retail price of $299, you will get the console (with 6.2-inch, multi-touch screen and USB Type-C port), two “Joy-Cons” (L and R), a “Joy-Con” Grip that can join the two Joy-Cons, two “Joy-Con” wrist straps (with enhanced shoulder buttons), console dock, HDMI cable and an AC adapter.
The Joy-Cons can also act a standalone controllers and include “rumble” vibration capabilities plus an accelerometer and gyro-sensor. The left Joy-Con will feature a capture button for screenshot to catch all the awe and action then share it on social media. The right Joy-Con will feature the familiar NFC touchpoint for amiibo figures for an expanded interactive experience plus an IR motion camera for even more enhanced gameplay. The battery life will last over six hours.
Nintendo will also sell Pro controller will be sold separately for $70 with additional Joy-Con pairs at $80 each, wrist straps at $8 and a charging grip at $30. Initial color offerings will feature two: gray Joy-Cons and one neon-red Joy-Con with one neon-blue Joy-Con.
Want to play online? Well, it will be free at first, but will transition to a paid subscription service this fall. The Switch supports online Wi-Fi multiplayer gameplay and can gather together with up to eight Switch systems for local wireless play.
Can’t find one yet? Nintendo is also bringing the Switch directly to the people on special three-day weekend events. It takes a special invitation to get one on Friday and Saturday, but the Sundays will be free and open to the public. Check out the following dates:
- Washington, D.C.: Feb. 10-12
- Chicago: Feb. 17-19
- San Francisco: Feb. 24-26
- Los Angeles: March 3-5
First party game offerings look promising and will include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, fighting game ARMS and the special 1-2 Switch where players have actual face-to-face showdowns (gunslinging, dancing, etc.) plus the third party support is there with over 80 games are currently in development.
