The Samsung Chromebook Pro will make a believer out of many Chromebook skeptics by offering great value, features and performance for a budget-priced laptop.
Despite some oddities, Samsung’s Chromebook Pro moves Chrome OS into a new era.
Luckily, you get to wait and see if Google fixes the Pro’s many problems. I’ll be back here to let you know how that goes. But for right now, know this: the dream of the just-right Chromebook is alive inside this machine, but it’s still just out of reach.
The Chromebook Pro is a sleek 2-in-1 with a bright and sharp display, integrated pen and solid battery life, but the Android apps need work.
With plenty of processing power, long battery life, and a gorgeous slim design, the Samsung Chromebook Pro will perform admirably as a primary laptop for casual users. More broadly, it's another sign that Chromebooks are coming into their own, able to replace more expensive laptops without sacrificing build quality and offline functionality.
This is far and away the best Chromebook Samsung has ever made relative to the competition at the time, and considering how strong the market has become that's an extra bit of praise. It's extremely thin and light without feeling cheap, has an excellent display and plenty of power for any Chromebook user while hitting a reasonable price point of $550. It also has the added bonus of a stylus that performs just as well as Samsung's Note line of phones and tablets.
The Samsung Chromebook Pro skews a little too heavily towards being an Android tablet. Regardless, it’s a solid hybrid that brings us one step closer to the perfect marriage between Chrome OS and Android.
I'll give the Chromebook Pro a proper review then, so again, don't take this cavalcade of complaints as a indicative of what consumers will experience. What you should take away from this experience is that it's not always a great idea to put beta software on the devices you use and depend on every day. Also: that the merging of mobile apps and true desktop web apps may sound wonderful and maybe even inevitable, but, for lack of a better phrase, it’s complicated.
In the end, the Chromebook Pro is a device that redefines the Chromebook category. It’s the first Chromebook to include an integrated stylus and pen support, but the laptop’s power plays a bigger role in this area. Samsung’s Chromebook Pro and devices like it offer performance that hasn’t been seen before on a Chrome OS device, extending the addressable market to include power users who otherwise wouldn’t look twice at a Chromebook.
