What's New With The Galaxy S8?

Samsung has unveiled its new Galaxy S8 phone. The company is hoping this new model takes people’s minds off the exploding debacle of the Note 7. So what’s new with the Galaxy S8?

For one thing, the phone features curved sides like the Galaxy Edge models. There’s nothing interrupting your view of that 5.8-inch screen of the S8 or the 6.2-inch display of the S8+. At this size, the phone is veering into phablet territory (phone/tablet.) Samsung calls this edge to edge view an Infinity Screen. The screen on the 5.8″ model features a 2960 x 1440 570 ppi resolution while the 6.2″ model has  2960 x 1440 with a 529 ppi resolution. The physical home button is gone.

There’s a fingerprint reader to allow biometric logins. It sits on the back of the phone near the camera lens. You can also log in with an iris scan, facial recognition or choose the traditional pattern, pin, or password locks.

Samsung is also introducing the Bixby digital assistant. Users can summon Bixby by voice or by pressing a button on the side of the phone. Not only can Bixby help you make appointments, it can also give you information on photographs in your camera or gallery.

For example, if you were taking a photo of a sign in Chinese, Bixby could translate what it means. If you were on vacation and taking a photo of a landmark, Bixby could tell you more about the site. Or if you see an item you’d like, point your camera at it and Bixby can tell you where to buy one.

The phone features 12- megapixel rear-facing camera and an 8 mp front-facing camera.

The camera can record 4K video at 30 fps and 1080p HD video at up to 60 fps. You can take 9 mp pictures while you’re recording 4K video.

The processor is an octa-core, 64 bit, 10 nm processor and the phone offers 4GB of RAM. The phones have 64 GB of internal storage that you can expand with up to a 256 GB microUSB card.

The S8 is water resistant for up to 30 minutes in 1.5 meters of water. You can’t take it deep sea diving, but it should survive a plunge in the toilet.

The other big change is that the GS8 uses the USB-C connection instead of microUSB.  So, your old chargers and cords won’t work with it.

The phone will be available in midnight black, orchid gray, coral blue, arctic silver, and maple gold. Prices start at $720.
