Star Wars Battlefront 2 release date, trailer, multiplayer and solo campaign info, EA Access news and everything you need to know

Rushing across the snow-covered battlegrounds of Hoth attacking up rebel troopers was brilliant fun in Star Wars Battlefront, putting you right in the thick of the iconic sci-fi universe.

Despite some short-lived thrills, the long-awaited reboot didn't quite have the longevity many had hoped for, with much of its content toned down or locked behind an expensive season pass. The sequel will hopefully right many of its predecessor's wrongs, and EA has finally begun discussing what we can expect. We won't get a full unveiling until E3 2017, but the early teasers have definitely got us hyped.

What is Star Wars Battlefront 2?

The first trailer for Star Wars Battlefront 2 may have leaked a little ahead of time, but the real deal has some more juicy single-player story details for fans of the space shooter.

The new information centres around the already-confirmed single-player campaign, where you’ll be fighting on behalf of the dark side in a bold new move for the series. In the shiny, black boots of elite TIE fighter pilot and Inferno Squad soldier Iden Versio, it is up to you to lead an imperial force in disarray amidst the destruction of Death Star II at the end of Return of the Jedi.

Created by EA's Motive - a new Studio including former Assassin’s Creed producer Jade Raymond and Portal designer Kim Swift - players will see the Star Wars universe through the eyes of a soldier that fully believes in the peace and order of the Empire. Versio, voiced by Janina Gavankar (True Blood, Sleepy Hollow), was raised on the all-new planet Vardos that fully reflects the Empire’s vision for the universe.

EA also confirmed that in the single player you won’t exclusively be fending off the rebel threat as a space baddie. For at least one mission, Star Wars fans can wield the green lightsaber of Luke Skywalker.

Whilst there were many narrative details announced at SWC 2017 for the single-player, gameplay footage was thin on the ground. However, attendees were told that the mode would share the epic battles players will be used to from the original multiplayer effort.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 multiplayer - what's new?

Speaking of multiplayer, EA promised that Battlefront 2 will be just as revolutionary here as up to 24 players can fight it out in the cinematic eras of the original trilogy, prequels, and more recent sequels including The Force Awakens and Last Jedi.

This means that players will be able to enjoy planets, characters, weapons, gadgets, and ships from all eras. You’ll be spoilt for choice when picking a hero character, but EA will also be overhauling the experience of playing as a rank-and-file soldier with a new class system. As a standard trooper your choices are currently listed as officer, assault, trooper, and specialist.

It has also been stated that while hero characters can fight across eras, this will not be the case for overall matches. In other words, you can acrobatically slash your way through Rebel forces as Darth Maul, but you won’t be fighting the Trade Federation as The Force Awakens’ Resistance.

In addition, DICE creative director Bernd Diemer envisions a ‘career’ mechanic for hero characters where players gain extra advantages and new abilities the more they play as a particular hero, be that Yoda or Kylo Ren. On top of giving hero characters more weight and depth, players will be required to complete in-game objectives to earn the right to be a hero or pilot a vehicle.

Developer Criterion - the studio behind last year’s Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One: X-wing VR mission - is in charge of enhancing the feel of vehicular gameplay. The wide range of ships are also taken from all three cinematic eras, so that includes the iconic Millennium Falcon and Boba Fett’s Angel I.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 release date – When is it coming out?

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC on November 17, EA has confirmed. EA and Origin Access subscribers can play it over a week early on November 9 with a downloadable trial.

We'll see more of Battlefront 2 in action at E3 later this month, including a 40-player battle taking place across the lush green planet of Naboo

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Trailer - How does it look?

We've yet to see any snippets of gameplay from Star Wars Battlefront 2, although the reveal trailer from Star Wars Celebration gives us plenty to get excited for.

Exploring the already confirmed solo campaign, we also catch a glimpse at new heroes from all eras of the beloved sci-fi franchise. Darth Maul, Luke Skywalker, Kylo Ren and more are confirmed for Battlefront 2. Space battles are also new and improved, developed by Burnout creators Criterion.
